Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
